One step At A Time For a Cure
One Step At A Time for a Cure
In between challenging myself to do half-marathon trail runs, I will also be training for the Vancouver BC half-marathon for Leukemia and Lymphoma society as a member of a special team called “Team John” in memory of John Steinhauser, husband of colleague Barbara Steinhauser. As I embark on my 18th event for Team, I continue to dedicate myself to raising funds that help with research and family support.
Even though I am on Team John, I continue to dedicate my seasons to three strong young ladies; two of whom I had the honor of teaching, Austen and Mary Elizabeth and the third my niece, Bree. Along with these three is my angel in shining armor, Joseph Boyle. In addition to these individuals who have made an impact on me, I am also going to dedicate my season to the families at Ronald McDonald House. Three times a year, I take a group of students to volunteer at Ronald McDonald house. During this experience, we meet many families who are in the beginning, middle or ending of their journey in the “cancer world.” Hence my fundraising goal has increased with so many needing the help during their journey.
My first angel, Joseph Boyle, will always be my inspiration as I spent two years watching his courage, as he fought AML eventually losing the battle.
Each event I participate in has become a unique journey for me. No season has been the same as I meet new heroes. Their demonstrations of courage, spirit and fight inspire me to challenge myself on all levels: emotional, physical, spiritual and fundraising.
Throughout their journey some have lost the battle, while others continue to enjoy the wonders of new days because of current treatments that are now available to them. None of these treatments would be available if it weren't for the unselfish support I, and others, have received from so many. Every step I take in training will have added meaning for me as I reflect on those who are in treatment, survivors and those who have joined the choir of "angels". Thoughts of them instills in me a desire, a need, a goal, that fills my whole being, to do whatever I can in the search for new treatments and a cure for all cancer.
I am asking for your assistance in helping reach my goal of $25,000. Feel free to pass this website on to anyone you know who would be interested in sponsoring me.
Many thanks,
Kathy Marion
